Amy and Roger's Epic Detour by Morgan Matson

Amy and Roger's Epic DetourAmy and Roger's Epic Detour

Amy Curry thinks her life sucks. Her mom decides to move from California to Connecticut to start anew--just in time for Amy's senior year. Her dad recently died in a car accident. So Amy embarks on a road trip to escape from it all, driving cross-country from the home she's always known toward her new life. Joining Amy on the road trip is Roger, the son of Amy's mother's old friend. Amy hasn’t seen him in years, and she is less than thrilled to be driving across the country with a guy she barely knows. So she's surprised to find that she is developing a crush on him. At the same time, she’s coming to terms with her father’s death and how to put her own life back together after the accident. Told in traditional narrative as well as scraps from the road--diner napkins, motel receipts, postcards--this is the story of one girl's journey to find herself.

Honestly fantastic. Made me want to hop in a car and travel the United States. It was also a great memory trip - I have been to so many of the places Amy and Roger traveled to, ate much of the food they experienced, and loved enjoying it again through "their" eyes. I thought it was only missing Rita's Italian Ice and Fluffernutters. This was a fun contemporary "journey" book, I loved both characters, there was pain and joy and growth and all that good stuff that makes for a great read, and now she needs to write another book NOT featuring them but giving us a nice glimpse of a happy cameo. Okay?

Postscript: AFTER I finished this book and reviewed it I realized I had another book from this author already checked out from the library, and YES, there was a cameo! Brief but perfect. Thanks.

Mom note: As a mother of readers, I also want to make a note to myself (and others if they care) why I would or would not have my children read this book, because honestly, sometimes I forget. This is a YA book, so everything is within YA strictures. Violence: none; Profanity: mild; Sex: yes
