Awaken by Meg Cabot

Awaken (Abandon Trilogy, #3)Awaken

by
From #1 New York Times bestselling author Meg Cabot, the dark reimagining of the Persephone myth comes to a thrilling conclusion.

Death has her in his clutches. She doesn’t want him to let go.

Seventeen-year-old Pierce Oliviera knew by accepting the love of John Hayden, she’d be forced to live forever in the one place she’s always dreaded most: the Underworld. The sacrifice seemed worth it, though, because it meant she could be with the boy she loves.

But now her happiness — and safety — are threatened, all because the Furies have discovered that John has broken one of their strictest rules: He revived a human soul.

If the balance between life and death isn’t fixed, both the Underworld and Pierce’s home back on earth will be wiped away. But there’s only one way to restore order. Someone has to die.

Meg Cabot, you have redeemed yourself. I almost gave this series up after the last book but decided, since in general I love your stories, and since you are probably one of the authors I most often recheck out from the library (yes, "recheck out" is TOTALLY correct terminology), I would read this final book in your Abandon series. And I loved you! Again! Pierce became the strong heroine we knew she could be, John was given some humility and much more likeability, and the story was happily wrapped up. This is definitely a trilogy to read all at once rather than piecemeal.

(Note: I reread this trilogy soon after reading this book, thinking I would like the 2nd book better but was still put off with the "oh woe is me" of Pierce and the manipulative machinations of John. So if you liked the first one, I promise the 3rd is much better than the 2nd.)

Mom note: As a mother of readers, I also want to make a note to myself (and others if they care) why I would or would not have my children read this book, because honestly, sometimes I forget. This is a YA book, so everything is within YA strictures. Violence: moderate; Profanity: yes; Sex: yes, not descriptive
